STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS Par Claire Ducène et Christophe Bailleau
Stream of Consciousness is an immersive video mapping artwork by Claire Ducène and Christophe Bailleau, transforming Hôtel de Graty into a visual and auditory theater. Inspired by the concept of the “stream of consciousness,” this installation explores the continuity of human thoughts, images, and sensations, a notion developed by William James. Local artists and writers appear as silhouettes around the hotel’s windows, creating a fluid dynamic that evokes the passage of time and the cultural richness of Mons.
Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a universe of living memory, where each open window reveals a new scene enriched by an original soundtrack. This composition blends electronic music with excerpts of local poetry, evoking the artistic and literary essence of Mons. Each sequence projects fragments of stories and inspirations linked to the city, connecting the past with the present. Stream of Consciousness invites viewers to see Hôtel de Graty as a space where light, sound, and memory converge, offering a renewed perspective on the city’s cultural and literary heritage.
With “Stream of Consciousness”, Claire Ducène and Christophe Bailleau invite a rediscovery of Hôtel de Graty, not only as a historical site but also as a space for artistic expression that connects past and present through an ongoing dialogue of light, sound, and memory.
