SOLEIL NUIT Par Sébastien Lefèvre (Le Pilote Productions)
“Soleil Nuit” by Sébastien Lefèvre is a monumental installation that explores the duality between day and night through two opposing discs. Each disc is made of a net stretched over a 4-meter-diameter aluminum ring, covered with more than 5,000 sequins. These colored mirrors, suspended and swaying in the wind, create a vibrant and dynamic dance of light, evolving with weather conditions.
The structure is supported by a 300 mm aluminum arch, stabilized by weights and covered with black lycra to blend the mechanical elements into the urban environment. The light sequences are enhanced by three powerful projectors, with a dedicated light source for each side: the “Soleil” disc is illuminated from within the courtyard, while an additional projector highlights the “Nuit” disc from the opposite side of Rue de Nimy.
To ensure safety and stability, the light poles are surrounded by Vauban barriers, and additional anchor points may be installed against the surrounding facades. The installation operates with an optimized power consumption of 3 kW, using energy-efficient projectors to minimize its ecological footprint.
The ambient music, composed by Jacob Stambach, accompanies “Soleil Nuit”, transforming the installation into an immersive sensory experience. Spectators can enjoy luminous vibrations reminiscent of an impressionist painting in motion. This project also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, utilizing recyclable materials such as polypropylene for the nets and polystyrene for the mirrors, along with local manufacturing to reduce the carbon footprint associated with transport.
